Electric Fencing Options: Poly Wire, Poly Tape, Poultry Netting, and Goat Netting
If you're a farmer or homesteader, you know the importance of reliable fencing to manage and protect your animals. Electric fencing has become a popular choice thanks to its practicality, adaptability, and efficiency. However, with several options available it can be a bit confusing to determine which one best suits your needs. In this blog post, we'll explore just a few of those options; poultry netting, goat netting, poly wire, and poly tape fencing and their differences.
Poly Wire: Lightweight but Mighty
Poly wire is a popular choice due to its lightweight nature and versatility. Made of durable plastic with intertwined metal wires for conductivity, it can be used for temporary or permanent fencing solutions. Suitable for various animals like horses, cows, deer, and pigs—it can also be customized in almost any configuration depending on your needs. The visibility of poly wire may vary depending on the color and the area, so it's essential to choose one that contrasts with your surroundings.
Poly Tape: High Visibility for a Safer Enclosure
Next up - Poly tape is an excellent option for those seeking a highly visible and durable electric fencing option. Much like poly wire, poly tape consists of interwoven metal wires within a plastic tape-like structure. However, the broader design of poly tape offers increased visibility. This makes it perfect for use in areas where visibility is crucial, such as horse or pig enclosures. The wider design also means that it is less likely to cut into your animals or cause injury. We currently use poly tape with step in fence posts and love the price tag along with how easy it is to arrange our paddocks but find that our goats and lgd seem to find ways around it.
Poultry Netting: Keep Your Birds in Check
Ideal for chickens, ducks, and turkeys, electric poultry netting is specifically designed to contain flighty birds and discourage predators like foxes or raccoons from venturing into your poultry yard. The closely spaced vertical lines make it difficult for agile predators or your birds to get through the fence and the connected step in posts make it incredibly easy to set up. The electrified feature provides an unpleasant but harmless shock to deter any unwelcome guests.
Goat Netting: Keep Billy Goat Gruff Where He Belongs
Saving the best for last - While similar in design to poultry netting, goat netting has larger spacing between the vertical lines to accommodate the larger heads of goats and sheep without causing harm or entanglement. One of the great things about goat netting is that it can keep in a wide range of animals that might be more inclined to sneak in and out of poly wire or tape fencing. Like poultry netting, this type of electric fencing also comes with step in posts and is easy to set up. Unfortunately, I have only been able to find it in 164' which mean you have to buy quite a few, and the immediate price tag is a little off putting but in the end when your animals aren't running crazy it will be well worth it.
In conclusion, the type of electric fencing you choose depends on your specific requirements, the animals you're working with, your enclosure's visibility needs and your budget. I hope some of this information helps you make an informed decision when selecting the perfect electric fencing solution for your farm or homestead and gives you peace of mind. Happy fencing!
